"Frost at Christmas" is the first book in the police procedural series with Detective Inspector Jack Frost of the Denton Division in England. I did not see the TV series "A Touch Of Frost" so as I read I kept picturing Peter Falk from Columbo. The TV series Columbo had to be more PC than this book though. Frost dislikes authority, loathes paper work, appears bumbling and has a rumpled, messy appearance. He, however, is very good at solving crimes as he has hunches that are lean on fact but turn out to be true.

The book begins with with a child disappearing on her way home from Sunday school. DI Frost is put on the case after another officer becomes ill. He is given a new Denton officer Detective Constable Clive Barnard to work with. There are other crimes that are solved along the way. One was a cold case that happened many years ago.

Frost's occasional comments about women did at times surprise me and take me out of the novel to think about what he said. The book was written in 1984 so perhaps this is the reason. I liked the supporting cast of characters. I felt Jack Frost was a complex character which the author showed us a little more of as the book progressed.

Frost at Christmas Jack Frost RD Wingfield 9780553571684 Books Reviews

My first Frost book. I have heard of but not seen any of the tv renderings and hugh expectations. The book is, to me, fast with many changes of scene. It seems to leap from place to place and I found it hard to keep track of the characters. Is it written with televised serials in mind? I wonder that. I much prefer prefer the style of the Morse books Perhaps my feelings will change after a second or third reading.
Fans of the TV version of Det. Insp. Frost escapades, are in for a treat. The original Frost is more complex than David Jason's amusing portrayal. The jokes are much cruder and wittier, and the supporting characters much more interesting. TV Mystery makers tend to simplify matters for, in their opinion, not so smart average viewer. This book is gritty and convoluted, and, even that I enjoyed the TV show for many years, more rewarding.
While I've seen a number of "A touch of Frost" programmes on TV I never realised that the books could be just as entertaining. The character is true to life and he adds just the right level of humour to his job. the book and the TV programmes are a perfect match. The writing is excellent and I only wish I'd read them sooner. As with all good things, there is a finite number and only too soon will I reach the last one, but in the meantime I've bought them all, so here goes!
Missing children and a crazy psychic are problems Jack Frost has to handle, but even worse, he's been saddled with a hotshot investigator as a partner--the Chief Constable's nephew. Not understanding the people and ways of Denton, this man manages to create havoc in every one of Frost's investigations. Jack is to find a missing girl--and I have to stop and ask why R. D. Wingfield tends to make all the young girls in his books both precocious and promiscuous.
Stop using Prozac or benzodiazepins. Read a Frost novel. There are several of them. Original British/English humor of best quality. Frost is an anarchist, police commissioner, dont like Computers, and definately not his ambitious inspector Mullet. He newer deliver all the statistically material about his doing/work in time and he appreciates first of all "Good old policework" - that means investigations in the field, not always according to all the rules. Fast cars and a lot of shooting is not what you get, but good humor, fine portraits of caracters and an excellent deskription of British society.

This is the first book of the Inspector Frost series, and it might well have been the last if Wingfield had killed him off as he originally intended. I have watched the entire set of A Touch of Frost on DVD and grew to love the characters so much that I thought I'd try reading the books on which the series was based. The book does not disappoint.

At first, we experience Jack Frost only through the eyes of others. It is great fun, especially because we know that Frost is a good detective despite all evidence to the contrary. Only later do we get glimpses of Jack's thoughts.

One satisfying element is that Frost's plate is full. He has many mysteries to solve, including finding out who's been filching coins from his desk, and why is someone ineptly trying to break into a bank every night?

I look forward to reading more books in the series.
The first in the British detective Jack Frost series from the late RD Wingfield. Mr. Wingfield introduces us to the chain smoking, hard drinking Jack Frost. While many series books take a volume or two to solidly build a character, Frost's character is developed very well from the onset.
Basically, a self-deprecating individual, the novel is written with the typical tongue in cheek British humor. The plot almost becomes secondary to the entertaining Frost.
Jack is about as unconventional as one can get and still be able to keep his career. Here he's teamed up with a young cop, who in the beginning, finds Frost somewhat of an enigma. They hit it off after a bit and the novel becomes a very good read. Half the fun in the Frost series is not in the plot, but in the way it's told.
