It talks about a legendary lost gold mine, a map leading to it, and proof in a safety deposit box back in Pitt Lake. He’s sent it to Matt in case something happens to him and cautions his son to keep it a secret. Matt is about to dismiss the letter when the telephone rings. It’s Raminder telling him his father has disappeared somewhere in the wilderness that surrounds Pitt Lake. Lost gold, lost love and lost hope compels Matt to return home. Will he find any of these, or does something else await him?

Matthew Bennett is quite a well-known foreign correspondent who has seen and witnessed so many things in his life, such atrocities that made him a different man, one who has visions, can't find peace and thus drowns his sorrow in alcohol. He is estranged from his family and his friends, but everything changes when his father disappears and leaves him with a treasure map. Matt starts a journey to find his father and possibly the gold, but it turns into a search for true love and meaning of life, in which he discovers his true soul and much more.Rod Raglin is above all an excellent narrator, very adept at descibing simple ordinary things around us. At the same time, his characters are very complex, yet very realistic people with many flaws. The author manages to present the story in multiple layers, switching between different scenes and charactes so easily and naturally. I trully enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it. If you are looking for something meaningful, you'll certainly get a lot of true love, trust, relationships, friendship, childhood memories, and a lot more in this excellent book.

Intriguing story about a man's quest. Searching for a father, gold, peace of mind, love? I am not sure about how well the booktitle fits the story. The forest and what is in it does play a (large) part. But maybe it is even more about the wars Matt has seen, witnessed, lived and the wars which are still raging inside him. Definitely worth reading!

Raminder Greer (Rami Batal, MFA, creative writing, University of British Columbia, Matt ex G/F) called Matthew Bennett (investigative reporter, The Citizen, University of British Columbia, former war correspondent) to let him know his dad Reverend John Bennett (alcoholic) is missing.
12 yrs. have gone by since he had been home. 1st. stop in Pitt Landing the local Big Foot Restaurant/Motel. Matt met Rhonda Jarvie (nee Parker, waitress, aka Raunchy, divorced), Lucky, Ivan Kalmakov (aka Jethro), & Grant Greer.
Matt caught up on all the local gossip then the discussion of his missing dad.
Lucky informed Matt the Reverend & he were partners in the Slumach’s lost gold.
Harry (bartender) kept the drinks coming. Things kind of went downhill from there for Matt.
Later the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Parminder Parm Singh Batal (Sikh, Corporal) stopped Matt. The 2 go way back.
Jan (waitress) got Matt some coffee & Parm his usual.
Dr. Jasminder Batal (Kings College) is Parm wife. She works at the Faye Greer Medical Clinic. She checked Matt out for a concussion.
Matt heads over to Pitt Landing Credit Union. F. H. Van Der Veen (Manager) informed Matt the Reverend had rented a safety deposit box. 4 potato sizes objects, a letter & a map were in there.
The Reverend’s boat was found & he was presumed drowned, no more searching.
A funeral was held. Rosemary Bee (Katzie Nation) told Matt her father had given the Reverend a map.
What about Grant & Raminder’s relationship?
Then there is Darshan (9, asthma, aka Gerard, piano) their son? What will happen to him?
Raminder & Matt were once in love, what will happen to the 2 of them now?
What of Garth & Ivan?
What will Matt do if he finds a gold mine?

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a very well written mystery suspense book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great foreign film adventure movie, or mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.
